ART. 6 – CRITERIA REGARDNG BICYCLES, CLOTHING and ACCESSORIES

L’Eroica is an event dedicated to cyclists with vintage or historically inspired road-racing bicycles, clothing and accessories.

6.1 – Bicycles

At L’Eroica, only the following kinds of bikes are permitted:

  • vintage road-racing bikes, or so-called HEROIC BIKES, as described in paragraph 6.1.a;
  • historically inspired or VINTAGE-STYLE BIKES, including recently built bikes, as described in the below paragraph 6.1.b.;

Only those bikes described in paragraphs 6.1.a / 6.1.b are permitted.

6.1.a – Heroic bikes or vintage bikes

HEROIC BIKES (or vintage bikes) are all road-racing bikes with racing handlebar, built up to and including 1987, both with and without gears, such as those built in the late 19th or early 20th centuries. These bicycles usually have a steel frame but rare aluminium frames are admitted as long as the tubes are screwed and glued (like ALAN type frames) and not welded.

Regarding components, bicycles should adhere to the following general guidelines:

a) More recent bikes with gears and derailleurs must have shift levers on the down tube of the frame (exceptions include pre-1980 non indexed bar-end gear shifters);

b) Pedals may have toe clips and straps or original pedals for older bikes; quick release, clip-less pedals are not allowed;

c) Brake cables must pass outside and over the handlebars (cables can pass inside the frame);

d) Older bicycles with gears must have the original gears;

e) Wheels must have at least 32 spokes laced to a low profile rim (20 mm depth or less); rims must be of either steel, aluminium or wood;

f) Both tubular tyres and clinchers with inner tubes are allowed;

g) We invite participants to fit saddles from the same period as the bicycles, so a model from 1987 or earlier; alternatively we suggest fitting a vintage model of modern production. Carbon saddles are not permitted;

h) Change of the gear ratios is allowed;

i) There are no restrictions regarding the type of brakes, as long as they are in keeping with the period of construction of the bicycle and they are safe.

Obviously, early 20th century bicycles without gears do not need to comply with the above criteria as long as they have their original components.

Bicycles made of composite materials, even if in the time frame within 1987, are not considered safe and are not allowed;

6.1.b – Vintage-style or modern built bikes

Vintage-style, steel framed bikes of new or recent construction with vintage look and characteristics may be used only if they are road-racing bikes assembled using vintage components or replicated parts similar to the originals, as described above.

Bikes inspired by models from the 1970s and 80s, as described in point 6.1.a must respect the characteristics (a,b,c) regarding shift levers, toe clips and straps and brake cables.

6.1.c – Waivers and exemptions

On request, exceptions regarding the type of bicycle may be granted to participants with disabilities.

For the 46 km route, other types of vintage bicycles will be admitted, such as postman’s bikes, general working bicycles, leisure bicycles, etc.

Mountain bikes are excluded from all routes.

Any registered cyclist who arrives at the starting line or is found on the route with a bicycle that does not conform to the rules and regulations of the event will be disqualified.

6.2 – Clothing

Participants must wear vintage or vintage-style cycling gear, such as wool jerseys and shorts and avoid wearing modern technical gear in a visible way. Modern lycra jerseys and shorts are not permitted.

6.3 – Accessories

With regard to the vintage spirit of the event, participants are invited to carefully select all their accessories, from shoes to caps and water bottles etc. The only modern cycling accessory allowed is a safety-cycling helmet, which we encourage everybody to use.

ART. 7 – RESPECT THE RULES OF THE ROAD

All participants are expected to respect the Rules of the Road.

L’Eroica is a non-competitive historical (“Ciclostorica”) cycling event on asphalt and white roads that favours the social aspect of cycling and aims to promote the territory. The routes are divided among little-used white gravel and asphalt roads along which riders will maintain a controlled pace.

Participants in the Long 209 km and Medium 135 km routes are OBLIGED to use front and back lights on their bikes or a light may be positioned on the helmet. Lights may be modern.

We recommend that all riders carry a repair kit for punctures and breakdowns.

  • the cycling club membership has been uploaded to the My Eroica page and validated by the Organisation;
  • the medical certificate showing fitness to practice sport has been uploaded and validated by the Organisation.

The L’Eroica Organisation may, incontestably, at any time, decide whether or not to accept a registration, without obligation to provide further explanation.

ART. 9 – SUBSTITUTION OR CANCELLATION

The new participant must register on the “My Eroica” platform and upload the requested documents (valid cycling club membership medical certificate showing fitness to practice sport, as per ART. 3 and ART. 4). The Organisation reserves the right to judge whether the requests received are prompted by an “objective impossibility to participate due to injury”, as documented by medical records, which will be handled in compliance with current privacy laws.

For cases accepted by the Organisation, the registration fee will be considered valid for the same event on the following year, upon payment of an administration fee of €15.

Any registration considered valid for the following year is strictly personal and cannot be transferred to a third party. Should the cyclist fail to participate again, the registration fee will be forfeited.
